It is bounded on the west and south by Long Beach, on the north by Bellflower, on the northeast by Cerritos, on the east by Cypress, and on the southeast by Hawaiian Gardens. Lakewood (SR 19), Bellflower, and Del Amo Boulevards, as well as Carson and South Streets, are major thoroughfares. The I-605 San Gabriel River Freeway goes through the city’s eastern outskirts.

The city had a total population of 79,190 as of the 2020 census, up from 76,616 in 2010. This ranked it as the 65th most densely populated city in the United States among cities with more than 50,000 residents (and the 8th most densely populated city in California).

Previously, the region was lush farmland fed by artesian wells and flooding from the now-contained San Gabriel River. In 1906, F.E. Woodruff, a local real estate investor,[6] founded the first municipality on the site, which was named Somerset in 1909 when a post office was established there.

The Bixby family gave their name to the Long Beach, California neighborhood known as Bixby Knolls. Long Beach’s Bixby Knolls neighborhood borders Wrigley to the southwest, California Heights to the southeast, and North Long Beach to the north. The Los Angeles River, the 405 Freeway (or Wardlow Avenue) to the south, Del Amo Boulevard (or the Southern Pacific railroad tracks) to the north, the Lakewood city line to the west of Atlantic Avenue, and south of Bixby Road, roughly define its limits. The primary thoroughfares running north to south through the area are Atlantic Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. The old Los Cerritos Ranch House historic site and the Los Cerritos – Virginia Country Club are both located in the area.
