California Heights

California Heights

West of the Long Beach Airport, south of North Long Beach and Bixby Knolls, east of Los Cerritos, and north of Signal Hill are California Heights. Atlantic Avenue, which runs through the neighborhood, provides a convenient location for shops and restaurants. Up until the early 1920s, California Heights was mostly used as a grazing area when it was a part of the Bixby Ranch (now Rancho Los Cerritos). The Signal Hill oil discovery and the subsequent land boom led to the Jotham Bixby Company’s division and sale of the California Heights tract’s lots in 1921.

Terminal Island

Terminal Island

Terminal Island, also known historically as Isla Raza de Buena Gente, is a large man-made island in Los Angeles County, California, located between the Los Angeles communities of Wilmington and San Pedro and the city of Long Beach. Terminal Island is roughly divided between the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. The island’s land use is entirely industrial and port-related, with the exception of the federal correctional facility on Terminal Island.

Wilmington

Wilmington

Wilmington, a community in California’s Los Angeles Seaport region with a high concentration of industry and the third-largest oil field in the continental United States, has a large Latino and foreign-born population. Nearly 20 percent of Wilmington’s total land area is taken up by the refinery—about 3.5 times the open and accessible green space. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilmington has one of the highest death rates in the Los Angeles area, exacerbated by elevated levels of industrial pollution.

It is home to Banning High School and ten other elementary and middle schools. Wilmington has six parks. Wilmington’s history dates back to the Spanish grant of land in 1784. It became an independent city in 1863 and was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1909. Of interest is the US Army headquarters in southern California and the drum battalion that was built to protect the future port of Los Angeles during the American Civil War.
